Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Friday that the deadline for filing federal income taxes had been pushed back from April 15 to July 15 in an effort to help businesses and families deal with financial woes from the spreading coronavirus pandemic.

“At @realDonaldTrump’s direction, we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties,” Mnuchin wrote on Twitter.

The treasury secretary had said Tuesday the deadline would be pushed back, but today was the first time he revealed the actual date.

Mnuchin and the IRS had also said Tuesday that the deadline for paying taxes would be pushed back, but Friday’s tweet states the filing deadline would also be extended.

Taxpayers can still file on time and Mnuchin Tuesday encouraged them to do so if they could, especially if they were expecting refunds.

States may follow the feds’ lead, which could put a large dent in their revenues as they battle the pandemic.
