WASHINGTON — Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) claimed in an interview this week that the Trump administration may be lying about the record-low number of border crossings happening on its watch.
“I will acknowledge that what is being reported is that border encounters are lower,” Crockett told NBC News’ Gabe Gutierrez on Tuesday’s “Meet the Press NOW”.
“I will also say that we know that this administration has not been the most honest when it comes to reporting numbers, as we know that there’s now reporting that they have not been honest about the jobs numbers,” she added.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett claimed in an interview this week that the Trump administration may be lying about the record-low number of border crossings happening on its watch. APIllegal border crossings hit an all-time low in June, with federal agents stopping 6,070 migrants crossing the US-Mexico border.
None of those were released later into the country, border czar Tom Homan noted.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced earlier this month that as of the end of November, her department had recorded seven straight months of zero releases into the US interior.
Of the 117,105 migrants apprehended along the southern border since Trump returned to the White House this past January, all have all been turned away.

“This is a bizarre conspiracy theory from a woman who couldn’t even properly read the FEC website before telling lies on the House floor,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital.
“It’s a fact that the border is the most secure in history, and dangerous criminal illegal aliens are being deported thanks to President Trump’s policies.”

Gutierrez pressed Crockett on how immigration has been a key issue for Texas voters as she launches her Senate campaign.
“A lot of voters — a lot of Americans who voted for President Trump — think that he has done a strong job at the border,” the host asked the Democratic lawmaker.
“In fact, border encounter numbers are down, and the president is touting that as a success. You obviously have issues with the way he’s going about it, but has the president been successful — can you acknowledge that — on bringing border encounters down?”
“What I can tell you is that he has invoked a very inhumane way of carrying out immigration,” she replied after casting doubt on the enforcement figures touted by the Trump administration.
“What I also can tell you is that he has not worked through the Congress, and that’s what we need is comprehensive immigration reform. What I also can tell you is that we have a historic number of people that have died in ICE custody since he’s been in,” Crockett went on.
At least 30 migrants have died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody so far in 2025, compared with 32 who died in 2004, The Washington Post reported last week.
By comparison, 12 deaths in ICE custody were reported in fiscal year 2024, the final full year of former President Joe Biden’s term.
The Texas Department of Public Safety recovered 23 illegal immigrants hidden inside a truck in La Salle County on Nov. 28, 2025. DPS Texas“What I also can tell you is that we have a historic number of American citizens that have been rounded up, and what I can also tell you is that this Supreme Court, unfortunately, has basically given him carte blanche to go after people because of an accent or because of what they look like, and that is wrong,” Crockett added.
Trump began suffering a decline in public support for his immigration agenda about halfway through 2025, with a slim majority of 50.1% disapproving of his job performance on the issue and 46.8% approving as of December, according to the RealClearPolitics polling aggregator.
That decline has occurred despite broad popularity, particularly in the early months of 2025, for the administration sealing the southern border and deporting migrants with criminal records.
