Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin cleaned house of appointees to the Pentagon’s policy advisory boards, dismissing eleventh-hour Trump administration nominees and those of previous White Houses, according to a report Tuesday.
Austin booted every member of the roughly dozen advisory boards on Monday, allowing him to avoid having to personally fire former President Donald Trump’s appointees, the Wall Street Journal reported.
He will name new members in the coming weeks.
Austin last week suspended the process to seat Trump administration nominees to the boards, an action that applied to those waiting for security clearances — including former 2016 campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and former deputy campaign manager David Bossie.
Trump named them to the Defense Business Board, which advises the defense secretary and other leaders on business practices.
Austin’s directive suspended their security clearance process.
In the waning days of the Trump administration, acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller named at least a dozen of the former president’s supporters to a number of Pentagon advisory boards.
Dismissed along with Bossie and Lewandowski were former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Henry Kissinger.
