Democratic state Sen. Jennifer Wexton beat incumbent Barbara Comstock on Tuesday in a Virginia congressional race.

The election was seen as a referendum on President Trump.

Wexton, a former prosecutor, helped the Democrats gain a seat held by Republicans in the state’s 10th district.

“I don’t like the way he talks about people, women and race,” she said of Trump. “He’s divided the country.”

Comstock had tried to cast herself as “a bipartisan leader” but Wexton claimed the congresswoman voted with Trump 98 percent of the time.

Wexton called herself “a bipartisan state senator who is determined to go to Washington and get things done for my constituents.”

Democrats are vying to take control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections.
