MEXICO CITY — One of Mexico’s leading television networks is using the words of Republican presidential aspirant Donald Trump to bump up the already heated rivalry between the US and Mexico men’s national soccer teams.
TV Azteca has begun running an ad that intersperses clips of Trump speaking with images of Mexican goals and US disappointments on the field.
Trump says, “Our country is in serious trouble.”
Then he intones, “We don’t have victories anymore. The American dream is dead.”
Trump angered many Mexicans this year with comments characterizing Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug traffickers. It made him a popular piñata subject.
The winner of the Oct. 10 match at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., will represent the region at the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.
