Amid a flurry of controversy, attorney general-designate Matt Gaetz on Thursday withdrew his nomination for the role given by President-elect Donald Trump.

Pols from Trump to House Speaker Mike Johnson are reacting — saying the former Florida rep who resigned that post earlier this month has a “wonderful future” ahead — as are other Congress members like New York Rep. Mike Lawler, a little less kindly.

Around the same time Thursday, Pete Hegseth — Trump’s pick for secretary of defense — broke his silence on sexual assault allegations against him.

Trump selected former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his selection for the coveted post after Gaetz withdrew himself from consideration.

“@PamBondi is a stellar selection by President Trump for Attorney General,” Gaetz wrote on X.

“Pam and I worked closely together when she was Florida’s Attorney General and I chaired Criminal Justice in the state house,” he added. “She’s a proven litigator, an inspiring leader and a champion for all Americans.”

By Samuel Chamberlain

President-elect Donald Trump went from one Floridian to another Thursday, announcing that former Sunshine State Attorney General Pam Bondi would be his new pick to lead the Justice Department, hours after former nominee Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration.

Trump has a long history with Bondi, who occasionally appeared with him on the campaign trail in 2016, 2020, and 2024 election cycles. AP

“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore,” Trump, 78, said in a statement on Truth Social. “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”

Marjorie Taylor Greene to chair DOGE subcommittee in the House of Representatives

By Victor Nava

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) will chair a new congressional panel tasked with working directly with the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.

The panel will be a subcommittee that falls under the umbrella of the House Oversight Committee, which is led by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.).

"A key step to driving greater efficiency in government is exposing the problem to the public—we are grateful that the House Oversight Committee has created a subcommittee to focus on this work," a spokesperson for Ramaswamy told Fox News Digital. "We look forward to working together."

Comer confirmed that Greene -- one of President-elect Donald Trump's fiercest allies in Congress -- would lead the panel during an appearance on conservative commentator Benny Johnson's podcast.

"She is going to be tapped to be the subcommittee chair that works directly with [Ramaswamy and Musk]," Comer said, adding that Greene is "not afraid to back down or walk away from a fight."

The House Oversight chairman noted that his committee has jurisdiction over the federal workforce and virtually "everything that Musk and Ramaswany are talking about" with regards to DOGE.

Comer said Greene's panel would spearhead efforts to "Implement their recommendations."

NY Republican reacts to Gaetz withdrawal: 'Justice has been served'

By Samuel Chamberlain

Hudson Valley Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) could barely contain his satisfaction at Matt Gaetz's withdrawal as attorney general-designate.

"Justice has been served," Lawler posted on X, along with an image of former House Speaker Kevin MCarthy (R-Calif.) with glowing eyes.

Gaetz successfully led a bid to oust McCarthy on Oct. 3 of last year, with the help of seven other House Republicans and 208 House Democrats. The remaining 210 House Republicans voted to keep the gavel with McCarthy, making Gaetz a less than popular figure among his colleagues.

Who’s up for Trump’s AG post after Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal?

By Josh Christenson

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz’s stunning withdrawal from consideration to be President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general has rocked Washington, with a slate of potential replacements returning to the fore.

Gaetz, 42, announced on X Thursday afternoon that his pending confirmation fight “was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition” — and pulled his name.

The decision came as a surprise to most GOP insiders after the ex-Florida pol had “positive” meetings with GOP senators on Capitol Hill — but a potentially devastating congressional ethics report on illicit drug use and sexual misconduct hovering in the background.

The House Ethics Committee heard testimony from female witnesses to Gaetz’s alleged drug-fueled sex parties early in his congressional tenure — with two claiming that the Republican lawmaker paid them more than $10,000 for the trysts.

"The end of an era," Ginger Gaetz posted on Instagram and X, alongside a photo of the couple climbing the Capitol steps.

Matt Gaetz, who was first elected to Congress in 2016, has indicated that he will not return to the House despite being elected to a fifth term earlier this month.

Immediately after the 42-year-old announced he was no longer a candidate to run the Justice Department, Republicans started questioning whether Gaetz will attempt to reclaim the seat he was re-elected to earlier this month or seek a different position — including potentially lobbying to take over for Marco Rubio in the Senate once Rubio resigns to become Trump’s secretary of state.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) expressed openness to the idea, telling Politico that “Matt would be a great person” if Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis doesn’t choose Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump to fill the seat.
