On social media, #WWIII, #WorldWar3 and #FranzFerdinand are trending as newspapers and cable channels parade experts warning that last week’s takedown of Iranian terror chief Qassem Soleimani has made the world far more dangerous.

But the regime in Tehran, though murderous, isn’t that stupid.

Obama-era National Security Adviser Susan Rice warns in The New York Times of “dire consequences.” Yet her specifics come down to listing all the ways Iran was already poised to strike at US interests — if it dares.

What is Tehran going to do that it wasn’t already? Reuters reports that Soleimani recently held a strategy session ordering militia leaders in Iraq to increase their attacks on Americans there, giving them “sophisticated new weapons” to do so.

As for the nuke deal, Rice’s fellow Obama alum Ben Rhodes admits in The Atlantic that it “didn’t stop Iran’s ballistic-missile program or its support for terror in the Middle East.” Indeed, though he doesn’t spell it out, the deal handed Tehran the cash to increase its aggressions.

Another Obamaite, Samantha Vinograd, told CNN, “All American citizens are now walking prime targets for Iranian retaliation.” But they have been, off and on, since the regime took 52 US diplomats hostage in 1979.

Iran has been on the attack for 40 years — but only as much as it thinks it can get away with. The regime is offering tough talk and noisy demonstrations now, but that’s standard procedure: The mass “Death to America” chants have never stopped.

With Iran’s economy in free-fall and the biggest protests in decades only recently suppressed, its leaders don’t dare try more than symbolic escalation. If it actually came down to war, they’d be the biggest losers of all.
