The sheriff of the Florida County where last week’s mass shooting took place said Wednesday that deputies will start to carry rifles on school grounds.

Sheriff Scott Israel of Broward County said during a press conference that rifles will be locked in patrol cars until they can obtain lockers and safes inside the schools to store the firearms when not in use.

There was an armed officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during the killing spree — but he did not discharge his weapon.

It wasn’t clear where the armed officer was during the rampage that killed 17 people.

The announcement from the sheriff came as President Trump suggested that school teachers should be armed to help combat shooters.
