ROCHESTER, New Hampshire — Nikki Haley 2024 supporters agree with her decision to skip the head-to-head debates with rival Gov. Ron DeSantis, saying her decision does not impact their opinion of her for the Granite State Jan. 23 primary.
ABC News and CNN had to cancel their scheduled presidential debates after both former President Donald Trump and Haley refused to attend, making DeSantis the only willing candidate to go on stage.
Haley, 51, debated DeSantis, 45, in Iowa on Jan. 10 without Trump, but after coming in third in the first-in-the-nation caucus, decided she would no longer debate without the former president or President Biden.
Every Haley supporter The Post spoke to in New Hampshire agreed with her strategy and thought she did “the right thing,” because she already had the chance to scrum with DeSantis.
“I think that’s absolutely the right decision, because she doesn’t need to stand up on a stage again with Ron DeSantis,” Haley supporter Jim Morton said, arguing she is making more of an impact by directly speaking with voters at small-town events around the state.
Carol Collins, who said she will vote for Haley on Tuesday, agreed.

Aristide Economopoulos“I think it was a smart choice because I think for right now, New Hampshire matters … and I’m not sure a debate would have brought all the people out to hear her as moving around the state will do for her,” Collins said.
“She’s not going to gain voters off DeSantis, she’s going to gain voters off Trump,” an independent Haley supporter at her Rochester rally added.
Others viewed her decision to miss the debate as a way to stay away from DeSantis, who is polling in single digits in the state.
“If she wants to be on a positive note, I wouldn’t have anything to do with [DeSantis]. I don’t think the man is honest, and he flip-flops,” Haley voter Jacqui Martel told The Post.

“If she was to reconsider, she probably should, and she should study what happened at the [Iowa debate] because she didn’t look good,” said Pat D’Amico, a liberal Democrat who is going to vote for Haley as a “blocking move” for Trump in New Hampshire.
Bob Thinnes, a Haley voter in Hooksett, argued that DeSantis is “not really interested in New Hampshire to begin with.”
“I think he’s more concerned with South Carolina, so I don’t think it would do any good, really,” for Haley to debate him in a state where she’s polling in second place,” Thinnes added.
DeSantis’ campaign has painted Haley’s decision to skip the debate as a way of shying away from the public and has been stressing her skip out in the days leading up to the New Hampshire primary.

Trump has missed every one.
New Hampshire Haley voters said they are more concerned with Trump’s absence than her decision to not face off with DeSantis again.
“I don’t disagree with the move. They’ve debated five or six times now, and frankly, I think the real question that should be asked is, why won’t Trump show up on stage,” Concord resident and Haley voter Tim Sheedy said.
“I’ve seen them debate enough times already and I would have loved to see Trump debate someone. I agree with her, I think she did it enough,” Pat Campbell, who is considering voting for Haley, added.
“I think it was a good idea. I mean, why does she have to debate? Trump should be debating,” Nashua resident Paul Schibbelhute said.
“I don’t see that she had that much to gain, and she’s been running around the state since last July at least,” he added. “I think the only one who would have really benefitted is DeSantis.”
