Half of Americans believe that former President Donald Trump should face criminal prosecution for storing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and nearly six in 10 think he acted inappropriately, a new poll has found.

Americans by 59% to 26% say Trump keeping the boxes of classified documents he brought with him to Florida was inappropriate, a Quinnipiac poll showed.

And 50% think the former president should face criminal charges.

As the saga has been unfolding over the storing of the documents since the Aug. 8 FBI raid, 76% of Americans say they are following the developments closely — split evenly between “very closely” and “somewhat closely.”

Asked how serious they think the allegations against Trump are, 49% say “very,” 15% say “somewhat,” while 13% say “not too serious” and 19% say “not serious at all.”

Among Republicans, 27% believe they’re “not serious,” and 67% shrug them off as being “not too” or “not serious at all.”

The poll showed that 40% of Americans approve of the job Biden is doing as president, an increase of 9 percentage points since July, but 52% still disapprove of his job performance.

Despite the upturn in the polls, the president still gets low marks for his handling of the economy (58%), foreign policy (54%) and the situation at the border (60%).

He has a 50% approval rating for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and a 44% positive rating for his work on climate change.

On the question of the direction of the country, 49% say they are “very dissatisfied,” 26% say “somewhat dissatisfied,” while 26% are “very” or “somewhat satisfied.”

The survey polled 1,584 adults between Aug. 25 and 29.

It has a plus/minus 2.5 percentage-point margin of error.
