Vice President Kamala Harris shocked Oprah Winfrey Thursday night by saying she would shoot any intruders that came into her home — an attempt to reassure gun owners skeptical of the Democratic presidential nominee.
“If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot, sorry,” Harris, 59, said during the star-studded “Unite for America” livestreamed rally hosted by Winfrey.
“Yes, yes. I hear that, I hear that,” the former daytime host and media mogul cut in.
Vice President Kamala Harris said any intruder breaking into her home is “getting shot.” AP“Probably should not have said that,” Harris said as the audience laughed. “But my staff will deal with that later.”
As vice president, Harris enjoys Secret Service protection and lives under guard on the grounds of the US Naval Observatory in northwest Washington DC.
The revelation that Harris (or someone close to her) would shoot a home intruder goes against her previous remarks opposing stand-your-ground laws, which allow the use of deadly force against an intruder without imposing any obligation on the homeowner to retreat first.
In 2020, the now- veep said stand-your-ground laws and citizen’s arrest laws “have often and frequently been used as an excuse or cover for people who are motivated by racism and racial profiling … it has been used as an excuse to kill black and brown people and in particular black and brown young men.”
Her campaign did not immediately respond to an inquiry from The Post.
Winfrey had also asked Harris about her statement during the Sept. 10 presidential debate against Donald Trump that she owned a gun.
The vice president’s comments about shooting a potential intruder shocked Oprah during the “Unite for America Rally.” AP
Harris said she and Tim Walz were gun owners during her debate with former President Trump. AP“I’ve made very clear my position on fracking and then this business about taking everyone’s guns away,” the Democratic nominee had said that the time. “[Running mate] Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We’re not taking anybody’s guns away. So stop with the continuous lying about this stuff.”
“I did not know that,” Winfrey said of Harris’ revelation. “And I thought that was powerful.”
The vice president reiterated that she doesn’t want to “take anyone’s guns away” but insisted that she was against “assault weapons,” without defining the term.
After the remarks about shooting an intruder, the vice president said she “probably should not have said that.” X@SecondGentlemanThe Harris campaign has not provided details about the candidate’s gun ownership, including the type of weapon or how long she has possessed a firearm.
Chris Rock and Julia Roberts were among the boldfaced names who videoconferenced in to sing Harris’ praises.
