Rep. Nancy Mace’s (R-SC) effort to censure her scandal-scarred colleague, Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.), failed Wednesday – with the House overwhelmingly voting to refer the resolution to the House Ethics Committee. 

In a 310-103 vote, lawmakers backed Mills’ motion to send the censure to the ethics panel, which is investigating the congressman for alleged campaign finance violations and “dating violence.” 

Mace’s resolution also sought to remove Mills from the influential House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committee over allegations of assault, “stolen valor” and abuse directed at women. 

“Rep. Mills’ record is tainted by allegations of stolen valor, domestic abuse, and arms deals with the U.S. government and foreign nations while serving in Congress,” said Mace. 

“This is not a man who should be sitting in the House Armed Services Committee or the Committee on Foreign Affairs.”

Democrats threatened to bring up a vote to censure Mills twice in a bid to scare off Republicans from penalizing “Squad” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) in September and Del. Stacey Plaskett (D-VI) on Tuesday, the latter of which sparked an outcry from multiple GOP reps.

On Wednesday, Democrats were almost evenly split on whether to censure Mills or send the resolution to committee – with 106 Dems voted in favor of the Florida congressman’s motion and 95 members opposing it. 

Only eight Republicans – Mace and Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), Kat Cammack (R-Fla.), Harriet Hageman (R-Wyo.) and Joe Wilson (R-SC) – voted against sending the censure to the ethics panel. 

Both Mills and GOP leadership have denied accusations that there was any sort of “backroom deal” to kill a censure resolution against Plaskett in exchange for sparing the Florida congressman.

On Tuesday, Republicans had seemingly been poised to censure Plaskett and boot her from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in response to revelations that she texted sex predator Jeffrey Epstein to dig up dirt on President Trump in 2019.

The vote failed hours after Republicans had rejected a bid from Democrats to thwart consideration of the resolution.

Censure is a formal rebuke in which lawmakers are brought into the House and reprimanded for bad behavior.

“Congresswoman Nancy Mace’s latest stunt is a politically motivated attempt to grab headlines and settle personal scores,” Mills, an Army veteran, told The Post in a statement about the censure vote.

“The American people deserve better than fabricated accusations and theatrics at a time when Republicans should be focused on governing.”

Mace, a sexual assault survivor and graduate of The Citadel military academy in South Carolina, argued that Mills’ presence on the House Armed Services Committee could “pose a threat to our national security.”

Mills has been accused of domestic abuse, stolen valor, and financial misconduct — all of which he denies.

Earlier this year, the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department looked into accusations that Mills had assaulted a female Republican activist at his penthouse, though she later retracted key parts of her claims.

The MPD had filed for an arrest warrant for Mills, but it was left unsigned by the then-acting US attorney for the District of Columbia.

Tipped off by the alleged assault, Miss United States 2024 Lindsey Langston, who claims to have been in a relationship with Mills from November 2021 to February 2025, alleged that he tried to blackmail her using revenge porn.

She filed a lawsuit against him in August, and a judge agreed last month to grant her request for a restraining order against him.

Mills was married during that time, but claimed in May that he was in the process of divorcing his wife.

The Florida Republican, who was awarded the Bronze Star in 2021, is also facing accusations that several of the individuals whose lives he claimed to have saved have no recollection of the incident.

“Cory Mills earned his Bronze Star, and the paperwork proves it. General Bray authorized and approved this award and any assertion that I signed General Bray’s paperwork without authorization is at best uninformed and at worst is offensive slander,” Mills’ chief of staff Catherine Treadwell told The Post.

Army Brig. Cmdr. Arnold N. G. Bray previously told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that he signed a recommendation for Mills to receive the award.

The House Ethics Committee is investigating Mills for alleged campaign finance violations, improperly receiving gifts and sexual misconduct.

The ethics panel announced that an investigative subcommittee would look into the accusations, which include having “failed to properly disclose required information on statements required to be filed with the House and breaking “campaign finance laws and regulations in connection with his 2022 and 2024 election campaigns.”

The allegations cited by the committee also concerned whether Mills “improperly solicited and/or received gifts, including in connection with privately sponsored officially-connected travel” or “received special favors by virtue of his position.”

And the investigative subcommittee will also look at whether the Florida Republican “engaged in misconduct with respect to allegations of sexual misconduct and/or dating violence” or “misused congressional resources or status.”

Wednesday marked the fourth time this week that the House contemplated a verbal reprimand of one of its members.

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) championed a resolution adopted Tuesday to denounce fellow Democratic Rep. Chuy Garcia (D-Ill.) for alleged “election subversion.”
