The House on Tuesday failed to muster the votes to overturn President Trump’s first veto, leaving his declaration of a national emergency over what he calls a “crisis” at the border in effect.
Just 14 Republicans joined Democrats in voting to override the veto, and the 248-181 vote fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to kill the president’s national emergency declaration, which Democrats dismissed as a political stunt.
Republicans in the House and Senate joined Democrats to pass the resolution a couple of weeks ago, but it was not expected to survive Trump’s veto.
The matter is likely headed to court.
