Republican leaders slammed Donald Trump’s statements that he couldn’t get a fair trial because of a judge’s “Mexican heritage” — with one powerful senator warning he had only weeks to straighten it out.

“He’s obviously stepped in it. He’s made statements that are inappropriate,” said Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, who has been mentioned as a possible running mate for the presumptive GOP presidential candidate.

“He’s got this defining period that’s over the next two or three weeks where he could pivot, can pivot — hopefully will pivot — to a place where he becomes a true general-election candidate,” Corker told Yahoo News.

House Speaker Paul Ryan also criticized Trump, calling the remarks about Judge Gonzalo Curiel — who is overseeing a class-action suit against Trump by disgruntled students at his now-defunct Trump University — “the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

“I disavow those comments,” Ryan (R-Wis.) said, despite still backing Trump for president.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsay Graham went a step further — he called on fellow Republicans to rescind their endorsements.

“He’s putting the race card on the table,” Graham told CNN. “I think it’s very un-American for a political leader to question whether a person can judge based on his heritage.”

Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk later followed Graham’s advice, saying, “I cannot and will not support my party’s nominee.”

Trump had called the Indiana-born judge a “hater of Donald Trump” who was not qualified to preside over a case because his parents were born in Mexico and he would hold Trump’s promise to build a border wall against him.

In a statement late Tuesday, Trump said his comments were “misconstrued” and blamed the media for distortions in reporting on the suit.

“It is unfortunate that my comments have been misconstrued as a categorical attack against people of Mexican heritage,” he said.

“I do not feel that one’s heritage makes them incapable of being impartial, but, based on the rulings that I have received in the Trump University civil case. I feel justified in questioning whether I am receiving a fair trial.”

But for the first time, he declared the matter over: “I do not intend to comment on this matter any further.”
