Iraq issued an arrest warrant for President Trump on Thursday for the killing of top Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani and an Iraqi militia leader one year ago in a US drone strike at the Baghdad airport, according to a report.
A judge in Baghdad’s investigative court that was looking into the deaths of Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis last January issued the warrant.
Soleimani was the leader of the elite Quds Force of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and al-Muhandis headed the state-sanctioned Popular Mobilization Forces, an umbrella group composed of a number of militia groups, including those backed by Iran.
The arrest warrant is for premeditated murder, a charge that carries the death penalty upon conviction.
It was issued “after the judge recorded the statements of the claimants from the family of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis,” according to a statement from the Supreme Judicial Council.
Earlier this week, Iran asked Interpol to direct law enforcement agencies around the world to arrest Trump and nearly four dozen American officials for Soleimani’s killing.
Interpol had rejected a request from a prosecutor in June to issue a warrant for Trump on “murder and terrorism charges” because its constitution forbids it from taking actions against a political figure.
