The fiancée of slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi said Friday that she turned down an invitation from President Trump to visit the White House — and detailed how Khashoggi had concerns about visiting the Saudi consulate where he was killed.

“Trump invited me to the United States but I perceived it as a statement to win public favor,” Hatice Cengiz said in an emotional interview with Turkish television channel Haberturk.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor and critic of the Saudi regime, was killed on Oct. 2 when he went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul for documents related to his upcoming marriage while Cengiz waited for him outside.

Cengiz, a Turkish national, said Friday that Khashoggi was initially concerned tensions would arise when he first went to the consulate on Sept. 28.

“I know he had questions in mind about whether something untoward could actually happen at the consulate,” Cengiz said. “He thought Turkey is a safe country and if he would be held or interrogated, this issue would be swiftly solved.”
