WASHINGTON — Hudson Valley Rep. Mike Lawler vowed to pursue a “full investigation” of New Jersey congressional hopeful Dr. Adam Hisham Hamawy, who clinched the Democratic nod Tuesday, over his ties to the late terrorist figure.

Hamawy briefly served as a translator and later a voluntary defense witness for Omar Abdel-Rahman, also known as the “Blind Sheikh,” who was convicted on terrorism and conspiracy charges in the mid 1990s. There is no evidence that Hamawy, who is Egypt-born, committed any wrongdoing, but his past proximity to nefarious actors has raised eyebrows. 

The veteran combat surgeon also spent time in Bosnia doing work for a foundation whose ties to al Qaeda were later unearthed. More recently, Hamawy publicly defended a hospital in the Gaza Strip that was later found to have been sitting over a Hamas tunnel network, where the terror group’s leader was later killed last year.”

Adam Hamawy was a defense witness for Omar Abdel-Rahman, the Blind Sheikh behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing,” Lawler (R-NY) told The Post. “A year earlier, he volunteered in Bosnia with an organization the U.S. Treasury designated a financier of terrorism and the 9/11 Commission tied to Osama bin Laden’s network.”

“He has never answered for any of it. If he is elected in November, I’ll demand a full congressional investigation into his terror connections.”

Lawler helms the House Foreign Affairs Middle East Subcommittee. Fox News first reported on Lawler’s remarks about Hamawy. Hamawy emerged victorious Tuesday in a crowded New Jersey Democratic primary for the 12th Congressional District race, which is widely seen as a Democratic stronghold. 

“Congressman Lawler should focus on his own flailing re-election campaign, rather than trying to smear an American hero, patriot, decorated combat veteran, and 9/11 responder with these gross and bigoted attacks,” a spokesperson for Hamawy fired back at Lawler in a statement to The Post.

The plastic surgeon had served in the Iraq War as a surgeon and later received awards for his service. Sen. Tammy Duckwork (D-Ill.) has credited him with saving her life after she was badly injured when her helicopter was taken down.

Hamawy had tended to the wounded in a hospital in the Gaza Strip back in 2024 and publicly attested to it being “benign.”

“In my three weeks at the European Hospital, I did not see a single weapon. Not one rifle. Not one pistol. Not one grenade launcher. This was a completely benign civilian hospital with no tunnels underneath it,” he told Jacobin Magazine months later in August 2024.

A year later, Israel uncovered Hamas-linked tunnels under that hospital, where it took down notorious Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar, the brother of Yahya Sinwar, the notorious leader of Hamas at the time of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack. Other top Hamas leaders were discovered in that tunnel system as well.

Shortly before Hamawy clinched the Dem nod to succeed retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman’s (D-NJ), it emerged that he previously volunteered with “Benevolence International Foundation” in 1994 for a brief stint in Bosnia. 

Many years later, the 9/11 Commission Report described that foundation’s operation in Bosnia as part of an “impressive array of offices [that] covertly provided financial and other support for terrorist activities” that Osama bin Laden relied on in the 1990s.

Additionally, Hamawy is known for his ties to Abdel-Rahman, who was convicted on charges pertaining to backing a “war of urban terrorism” against the US after the feds began cracking down on terrorism following the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Hamawy had met Abdel-Rahman years earlier and joined him on a road trip for a conference to Detroit, where the “Blind Sheikh” allegedly mused about “conquering the land of the infidels,” per a court transcript. Hamawy testified on behalf of the “Blind Sheikh,” insisting that those comments were taken out of context.

During his campaign, Hamawy crusaded against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Hamawy has also opposed US aid to Israel.

“It’s like giving a bully body armor to go bully people some more,” Hamawy told left streamer Hasan Piker, who said America deserved 9/11, back in April. 

“We need to be able to have them feel the effects of war, and then they’ll stop.”

There is currently legislation pending in Congress, Block the Bombs, that would cut off the transfer of offensive weapons to Israel. That bill has been backed by Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.), who has described it as a litmus test for candidates she would back. Ramirez backs Hamawy, whose campaign confirmed he supports that legislation.
