French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday rejected President Trump’s assertion that Germany is “totally controlled” by Russia because of an energy deal.
“No. No,” said Macron as he sat next to Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Brussels.
Macron said he and Trump “just discussed” the issue and said “we work together.”
Trump said it was a “great honor” to meet with Macron and lauded him for doing a “terrific job.”
“We have a tremendous relationship,” Trump said. “We’re discussing trade. We’re discussing NATO. We’re discussing a lot of different things and hopefully in the end it will all work out. So it is great to be with you.”
At a breakfast with NATO Secretary-General Jen Stoltenberg earlier Wednesday, Trump took Germany and Chancellor Angela Merkel to task for a project that would deliver natural gas via a pipeline under the Baltic Sea from Russia to northern Germany.
“But Germany is totally controlled by Russia,” Trump said about the Nord Stream 2 project.
“I think it’s very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia, where you’re supposed to be guarding against Russia, and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia,” Trump told Stoltenberg.
