Secretary of State Mike Pompeo heads for Russia on Sunday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials.
The agenda likely will be dominated by the quagmires in Iran, Syria, Venezuela and elsewhere.
The US and Russia have been at odds over those countries, but President Trump recently voiced optimism he can meet his campaign goal of creating good ties with Moscow.
Earlier this month, Trump spoke with Putin over the phone. Trump said they discussed a wide range of issues, tweeting, “Tremendous potential for a good/great relationship with Russia, despite what you read and see in the Fake News Media. Look how they have misled you on ‘Russia Collusion.'”
