A majority of Republicans ranked Donald Trump over Civil War hero Abraham Lincoln when asked which was the better president, according to a poll — a result that Trump seized on as an argument against impeachment.
“And the Do Nothing Democrats want to impeach President Trump?” he tweeted over a link to a news story about the stunning results, which found that 53% of GOP voters prefer Trump, while 47% favor Honest Abe.
The Economist/YouGov survey of 1,500 adults asked Democrats, Republicans and independents to compare Trump to seven other GOP presidents, including Lincoln, Richard Nixon and both George Bushes.
Every one of them — even the widely despised Nixon, who resigned his office in disgrace — beat Trump among all voters.
But Republicans named Trump their favorite by a wide margin in every matchup — with only one exception, according to the poll released Friday.
Ronald Reagan remains Republicans’ most beloved president, beating Trump by 59% to 41% in terms of favorability.
