House Speaker Nancy Pelosi invited the US women’s national soccer team to the Capitol following its World Cup win over the Netherlands on Sunday.
The California Democrat praised the team for its “strength, unity & patriotism.”
“By popular, bipartisan demand” with Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.) and Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Ill.), “co chairs of Soccer Caucus, I’m pleased to invite the players to the US Capitol as a team or individually to celebrate your inspiring victory.”
President Trump congratulated the team on its 2-0 win on Sunday.
”It’s a great honor to have them capture it for the United States – fourth time – and that’s a tremendous thing. So congratulations to the team on the World Cup,” he said.
Asked if he would invite them to the White House, he said, “We haven’t really thought about it.”
Megan Rapinoe, who won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball as the tournament’s top scorer and best player, has said she would not go to the “f–king White House” if the team won the World Cup.
Trump reacted to her comments on Twitter, saying that “teams love coming to the White House.”
The president said he was a “big fan” of women’s soccer, but that Rapinoe should “WIN first before she TALKS!”
Rapinoe has already accepted an invitation for the team to visit the House from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
“Consider it done,” Rapinoe wrote last month.
