Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi praised “patriotic American” Joe Biden after he ended his presidential campaign.

“President Joe Biden is a patriot American who has always put our country first,” she said.

Pelosi (D-Calif.) added her thanks to Biden for his service in government.

“With love and gratitude to President Biden for always believing in the promise of America and giving people the opportunity to reach their fulfillment.

“God blessed America with Joe Biden’s greatness and goodness,” Pelosi said.

The congresswoman’s comments come just days after reporters emerged that she told Biden she doesn’t believe he can beat GOP candidate Donald Trump in November. 

Pelosi allegedly warned the president that he would destroy the party’s chances in the upcoming election and showed him polls that Trump would be the victor, four sources told CNN.   

She was among the senior Democratic officials who encouraged Biden to step aside in recent weeks following his poor performance during last month’s presidential debate.

• President Biden announced Sunday he is dropping out of the 2024 presidential race — after weeks of prominent Democrats and donors calling on him to withdraw following his disastrous performance in the first presidential debate.
• In a letter posted on X Sunday afternoon, Biden admitted that it is in the “best interest of my party and country” for him to step down as the Democratic nominee.
• Biden wrote that he intends to serve out the remainder of his term and will address the country on his decision later this week.
• In a follow-up X post, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the suddenly open Democratic nomination. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” the president wrote.
• Former President Donald Trump reacted to the news by labeling Biden the “worst president in the history of our country” in a call with CNN.

Just days before Pelosi’s alleged conversation with Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) encouraged Biden to step aside, ABC reported. 

Now, like Pelosi, Schumer has put out a statement praising Biden as a “true patriot” following the president’s decision to step down. 

“Joe Biden has not only been a great president and a great legislative leader but he is a truly amazing human being. His decision of course was not easy, but he once again put his country, his party, and our future first,” Schumer said in a statement 

“Joe, today shows you are a true patriot and a great American,” the senator added.

While neither Pelosi nor Schumer had publicly called on Biden to end his campaign, more than 20 other Democratic members of Congress did.
