House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday evening signed the article of impeachment against President Trump for allegedly inciting last week’s Capitol riot.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) gave only a brief statement to reporters and took no questions at the engrossment ceremony following a 232-197 House vote. Ten Republicans voted to impeach.
“Today in a bipartisan way the House demonstrated that no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States, that Donald Trump is a clear and present danger to our country, and that once again, we honored our oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States so help us God,” Pelosi said.
She added: “And now, I sadly and with her heart broken over what this means to our country, of a president who would incite insurrection, will sign the engrossment of the article of impeachment.”
Those voting to impeach said Trump organized a mob when he spoke to thousands of supporters and urged them to march on the Capitol to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s win. Four Trump supporters and one police officer died during clashes at the Capitol.
