An ill wind knocked over the National Christmas Tree outside the White House Tuesday afternoon, two days before it was set to be officially lit by President Biden.
The stately 40-foot spruce, which had been delivered to the White House Ellipse just south of the executive mansion on Nov. 14, fell at around 2 p.m. ET, according to officials.
Work crews scrambled to salvage the tree and get it set upright with a crane.

The tree was lifted back up by a crane. NBC4 WashingtonIt was not immediately clear whether the already-decorated tree would be salvageable for Thursday’s lighting ceremony, a tradition which is celebrating its centennial this year.
The National Park Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post.
Some conservative wags were quick to needle the Biden administration over the tree’s fall.
“National Christmas tree falls DOWN. Perfectly summing up Joe Biden’s presidency,” the House Judiciary GOP X account wrote.
Meanwhile, the US Capitol tree lighting ceremony carried on as scheduled Tuesday evening.
The tree fall comes one day after the White House unveiled its decorations for the Christmas season.
The tree fell one day after the White House unveiled its holiday decorations. NBC4 WashingtonIn a departure from the past two Christmases, the Bidens opted to forgo hanging stockings over the mantle in the State Dining Room — a decision which raised eyebrows after the first couple belatedly acknowledged first son Hunter Biden’s out-of-wedlock daughter, Navy Joan Roberts, earlier this year.
In 2021 and 2022, the stockings were given pride of place in the holiday display and bore the names of the first grandchildren and first pets.
President Biden and his family are planning to celebrate Christmas at Camp David this year and will hang the stockings there instead, per a White House spokesperson.

More than 300 volunteers helped set up the decorations, which are based around the theme of “The Magic, Wonder and Joy” of Christmas.
