The Palm Beach Zoo and Conservation Society has joined a growing list of charities and organizations to cancel events at President Trump’s exclusive Florida resort following his controversial comments about violence at a white supremacist rally.
“We have an unyielding commitment to inspire people to act on behalf of wildlife and the natural world,” said Andrew Aiken, the zoo’s CEO and president said in a statement on Sunday. “After thoughtful consideration by zoo leadership, we have decided it is important that we not allow distractions to deter us from our mission and culture.”
The zoo’s decision to pull its business from Mar-a-Lago comes after Trump blamed “many sides” for the unrest at a white nationalist gathering in Charlottesville, Va., where one woman was killed after a neo-Nazi sympathizer plowed his car into a crowd of protesters.
It joins eight other groups — including the Cleveland Clinic, the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross — to cancel galas the Palm Beach resort.
