The NYPD on Monday took the extraordinary step of stopping and boarding every city bus that traveled down Fifth Avenue near Trump Tower during the president’s visit.
Police are also checking cars at random during his two-night stay at Trump Tower. Any suspicious bags will also be searched, sources said. NYPD Chief of Department Carlos Gomez urged motorists to avoid the area around Trump Tower entirely.
“We’re trying to avoid a suicide bomber, basically,” said a high-ranking source who called the bus checkpoints “unusual.”
“You have to account for anything that’s going past that building. The buses and trucks are passing right in front of the building.”
