The Trump administration said on Thursday that it has reunited just 264 of the more than 2,500 children ages 5 and older who have been separated from their families at the border.

The Justice Department acknowledged the number in a court filing just one week before a deadline to reunite the children that was imposed by Judge Dana Sabraw in the Southern District of California.

That could leave hundreds of children in limbo, presumably at Health and Human Services’ detention center, by the court-ordered deadline on July 26.

More than 900 of the migrant parents are deemed “not eligible” to be reunited because of criminal backgrounds or because the parent required “further evaluation.”

In addition, NBC reported that of the 1,607 parents eligible to be reunited with their children, 719 have final orders of deportation.

These parents would have to choose whether to bring their children back to their crime-ravaged communities in Central America or leave them in the hands of the US government.
