Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ripped President Trump’s Middle East peace plan during a speech Tuesday before the United Nations Security Council, characterizing it as a gift to Israel that would bring an end “to the question of Palestine.”

Waving a copy of the Trump administration’s map that shows a two-state solution for the Israelis and the Palestinians, Abbas likened the carved up design for a Palestinian state as “Swiss cheese.”

“It is an Israeli-American pre-empitve plan in order to put an end to the question of Palestine,” he said.

Abbas rejected the peace plan Trump unveiled at the White House Jan. 28 alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The plan rewards the occupation instead of holding it accountable for all the crimes it has perpetrated against our people and our land,” Abbas said. “This plan will not bring peace or stability to the region and therefore we will not accept this plan, we will confront its application on the ground.”

The proposal, the culmination of a three-year effort by Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, doubles the territory under Palestinian control and offers a path to statehood if the Palestinians meet a number of conditions.

But it also recognized Israel’s sovereignty over settlements in the West Bank.

Abbas urged the president to return to the negotiating table and called the Security Council to hold an international conference to try to reach an agreement.

“The US cannot be the sole mediator,” Abbas said.

Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, said Abbas is standing in the way of peace.

“Progress toward peace will not be made so long as President Abbas remains in his position,” Danon said. “Only when he steps down, can Israel and the Palestinians move forward. A leader who choses rejectionism, incitement and glorification of terror can never be a real partner for peace.”
