House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday that he refuses to support Donald Trump as the party’s presidential nominee — for now.
“I’m just not ready to do that at this point,” Ryan explained in an interview on CNN.
“I hope to support our nominee,” he said. “I’m just not there right now. I want to, but I think what is required is that we unify this party… and then go to the country with an appealing agenda that can be appealing to independents and disaffected Democrats.”
Trump countered later Thursday: “I am not ready to support Speaker Ryan’s agenda. Perhaps in the future we can work together and come to an agreement about what is best for the American people. They have been treated so badly for so long that it is about time for politicians to put them first!”
Ryan, the highest-ranking elected Republican, had chosen to keep quiet up until now.
