Don’t be fooled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s “security concerns”: In calling for a delay of President Trump’s State of the Union Address, her only motive is obviously to deny him a nationally televised bully pulpit from which to press Democrats to end the government shutdown.
She’s clearly also sending Trump another reminder that her House Democrats won’t hesitate to flex their new political muscle and publicly provoke him.
In a formal letter, Pelosi urged the president to put off the speech until the shutdown is over, citing the lack of current funding for the Secret Service. Yet that agency and Homeland Security both say there’s no such worry.
She also suggested he give the speech from the Oval Office or “deliver” it in writing, as was once traditional.
But in citing the shutdown as a factor, Pelosi failed to note that she’d issued the required invitation from Congress while the shutdown already was in effect.
Similarly, she said there is “no precedent” for holding the State of the Union during a shutdown — ignoring the fact that no previous address has ever been scheduled during a time when the government is (partly) idled.
No, the real point is to avoid letting Trump publicly hammer congressional Democrats while they’re obliged to sit there and take it.
It’s yet another sign they aren’t seriously interested in ending the shutdown, only in playing politics. Including, of course, trying to provoke the president, as the letter also plainly aimed to do. (Trump’s failure to immediately respond to the taunt no doubt disappointed Pelosi.)
Some Republicans are urging the president to at least temporarily open the government while wall funding is negotiated. But it’s ultimately up to Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to come to the table and negotiate seriously.
Pelosi knows that — which is why she’s resorting to desperate diversions.
