Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday said he urged President Trump to give the Saudis “a few more days” to complete their investigation into the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi from the Saudi consulate in Turkey more than two weeks ago.

Pompeo, speaking at the White House after briefing Trump, said he met with Saudi King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and other officials during his visit to the kingdom and said “they take this matter very seriously.”

“They assured me they will conduct a complete and thorough investigation of all the facts surrounding Mr. Khashoggi and they will do so in a timely fashion,” America’s top diplomat told reporters.

He said he told the president that “we ought to give them a few more days to complete that so we too will have a complete understanding of the facts at which point we can make decision whether the US should respond to the incident surrounding Mr. Khashoggi.”

He said the king and the crown prince guaranteed to him that they will conduct a “complete and thorough” investigation and “do so in a timely fashion.”

He also said he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and members of his team conducting an examination of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where Khashoggi vanished on Oct. 2.

He said Erdogan said he would share their findings with the US and the Saudis.

“We do believe that between these two efforts, a complete picture will emerge for what actually transpired here,” Pompeo said, adding that he expects it to “wrap up quickly.”

Turkish officials believe a team of Saudi operatives killed and dismembered Khashoggi, who had written critical articles about the crown prince’s government.

Khashoggi has been in the US for a year and has written for the Washington Post.
