The Russian Defense Ministry has released aerial footage of the damaged Shayrat air base in Syria after it was pounded by US cruise missiles.

Russia said only 23 of the 59 missiles fired from US warships hit their mark, but that six Syrian jets and several buildings were destroyed in the attack.

The infrared video shows what appear to be several jet fighters surrounded by scattered fires around the airfield.

Also visible are a number of hardened above-ground bunkers, some of which sustained heavy damage from the $1.6 million-apiece Tomahawk missiles.

A separate image shows the interior of one of the bunkers, where the mangled remains of what may have been aircraft are seen.

The air base in western Syria contained about 40 of the hardened shelters.
