The Senate on Monday confirmed Denis McDonough — who served as President Barack Obama’s chief of staff — as the next Veteran Affairs secretary.

McDonough, who has never served in the armed forces, replaces Robert Wilkie, a pick of former President Donald Trump.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has presented organizational challenges for both parties over the years.

McDonough told lawmakers he possesses the ability to tackle — and solve — complex governmental challenges.

He also said that serving as Obama’s chief of staff allowed him to view the sacrifices made by veterans, whom he said he feels he owes a debt of gratitude to.
