The Senate on Thursday passed a resolution by a unanimous voice vote that “affirms that the press is not the enemy of the people” and “condemns the attacks on the institution of the free press.”

The resolution — which also “reaffirms the vital and indispensable role that the free press serves” in the US democracy — came the same day that President Trump labeled the press the “opposition party” on Twitter.

“THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA IS THE OPPOSITION PARTY. It is very bad for our Great Country….BUT WE ARE WINNING!” the commander-in-chief tweeted after more than 300 newspapers nationwide published editorials slamming his constant cries of “fake news” and claims that journalists are “the enemies of the American people.”
