The family of a murdered Loyola Chicago student slammed Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker for tepid statements calling her death a “senseless tragedy” before veering into attacks on President Trump – with the heartbroken family insisting instead that “the system failed her.”

“Calling this ‘senseless’ is not enough. There must be a clear and honest accounting of what went wrong,” the family said in a scathing statement Thursday.

“Our daughter was not in the wrong place at the wrong time. The system failed her,” they added, according to Fox News. “We are not interested in rhetoric. We are asking for accountability.”

Gorman, an 18-year-old Loyola University student from Upstate New York, was shot in the head around 1 a.m. on March 19 while walking near a Chicago pier with friends.

The group had been trying to see the northern lights, when Venezuelan illegal immigrant Jose Medina-Medina, 25, allegedly jumped out of the shadows and shot her as the group fled from him.

Medina-Medina was quickly arrested after his own mother helped identify him from security footage, and it was soon revealed that he had been both let into the country by Border Patrol in 2023 and later released from a shoplifting arrest under Chicago’s sanctuary policies.

Both Johnson and Pritzker issued statements about the murder Monday, and after sparing some words for Gorman both quickly veered off into political attacks on the president.

“This has been a terrible tragedy, and I know that the Gorman family has suffered mightily,” Pritzker said. “There have been real failures. Those failures, of course, extend beyond the borders of Illinois. That’s their national failures, a failure to have comprehensive immigration reform, a failure of the president to follow his own edict to go after the worst of the worst.”

Mayor Johnson’s made a similar statement offering his “condolences to the Gorman family.”

“You know what the bigger threat to our public safety, it’s illegal weapons that are being trafficked from bordering states that voted for Donald Trump,” Johnson said. “This president refuses to be held accountable. And he points the finger at everything and everyone else versus doing some real self-reflection on what his responsibility is.”

Pritzker and Johnson have both drawn the ire of President Trump after they staunchly resisted his crackdowns on illegal immigration in the city.

Trump also threatened to deploy the National Guard to Chicago at the end of 2025, with a showdown between Illinois leaders and the White House making it all the way to the US Supreme Court before the deployment was blocked. 

But Gorman’s family wasn’t interested in the local pols’ squabbling about Trump.

“Our daughter is not a policy debate. She is a life that was taken, and that demands accountability,” the family said. “Calling this a tragedy is not enough.”

“We will not allow Sheridan’s life to be reduced to a talking point or a generalization,” they added. “We expect leadership that is willing to confront hard truths and ensure that what happened to her does not happen again.”
