Democrats have chosen Stacey Abrams, who lost Georgia’s gubernatorial race in November, to deliver their response to President Trump’s State of the Union address next week, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Tuesday.
Abrams, an African-American, will speak during prime time shortly after Trump wraps up his address to a joint session of Congress next Tuesday.
“She is just a great spokesperson. She’s an incredible leader. She has led the charge for voting rights, which is at the root of just about everything else. I’m very excited that she’s agreed to be the respondent to the president,” Schumer told reporters.
Abrams lost a narrow vote in an election that was marred by reports of vote fraud, and has been eyed as a rising star in the Democratic Party.
She met in DC with the New York Democrat, who has been looking for candidates to challenge incumbent Georgia GOP Sen. David Perdue in 2020.
