US stock futures rose early Monday as investors welcomed signs that President Trump was recovering from the coronavirus.

Futures contracts for the Dow Jones industrial average were up 202 points, or about 0.7 percent, at 27,767.00 as of 7:03 a.m. after Trump’s medical team said he was continuing to improve and could be released from Walter Reed Medical Center as soon as Monday.

Futures for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 indexes also climbed roughly 0.7 and 1 percent, respectively, after posting losses Friday as Trump was airlifted to the hospital from the White House.

While investors appeared reassured by Trump’s doctors’ rosy assessment of his recovery, markets will likely remain highly sensitive to any developments around his illness. That’s reflected in a 7.7 percent jump early Monday in the CBOE Volatility Index, which is known as Wall Street’s fear gauge.

“With 29 days away from the Nov. 3 election, any reports about President Trump’s health or the outbreak among top Republican leaders may unleash bouts of high volatility,” Bloomberg macro analyst Tommi Utoslahti said in a commentary.

There were also more concerning messages in the doctors’ Sunday briefing, such as their admission that Trump had received supplemental oxygen and a steroid called dexamethasone, which is typically reserved for severe COVID-19 cases.

Global stocks nevertheless climbed ahead of Wall Street’s opening bell Monday. London’s FTSE 100 jumped as much as 1.2 percent, while Germany’s DAX rose as much as 1.1 percent and South Korea’s KOSPI ended the day up about 1.3 percent.

Investors have also been closely watching negotiations in Congress for another stimulus package to address the economic damage from the pandemic.

President Trump urged lawmakers to reach a deal Saturday, saying in a tweet that they should “WORK TOGETHER AND GET IT DONE.”
