The United States and North Korea are involved in talks for a third summit between President Trump and Kim Jong Un, seeking to jump-start negotiations after a previous meeting in February collapsed without an agreement on nuclear weapons.

”Both sides have been engaged in dialogue in regard to a third summit,” South Korean President Moon Jae-in revealed Wednesday. “It’s noteworthy that the behind-the-scenes talks have been preceded by the mutual understanding of each other’s position gained through the Hanoi summit.”

Trump is expected to meet with Moon in South Korea on Saturday following the G-20 meeting in Japan this week.

The summit in the Vietnamese capital — Trump and Kim’s second — fell apart after the US couldn’t get North Korea to agree to denuclearize as Pyongyang argued for relief from sanctions.

There has been no progress since then and North Korea has resumed test-firing missiles.

Moon said he didn’t see the summit as a failure but as a chance for the two leaders to build a foundation of understanding.

“The success of denuclearization and the peace process on the Korean peninsula cannot be determined by a summit or two,” Moon said. “Both sides clearly understand the necessity for dialogue.”

He also said the letters Trump and Kim have recently exchanged show that their “willingness to engage in dialogue has never faded.”

Meanwhile, North Korea’s foreign ministry released a statement through state-run media saying that the US sanctions are trying to “bring us to our knees.”

The statement also said the country “will not hesitate to pull a muscle-flexing trigger in order to defend ourselves” if anyone tries to infringe on its sovereignty.
