A Swiss tourist boat captain angry with President Trump is making waves for putting up a poster that appears to ban Americans from his vessel, according to a report.
Capt. Olivier Hanggeli reacted to the president pulling out of the Paris climate agreement by displaying the poster by the ticket stand of the eco-friendly Aquarels du Léman excursion company on Lake Geneva.
“No American people. No American money. You protect your business, I protect my planet,” the unfriendly poster reads.
“I’ve been working to promote renewable energy for ten years because I think we need to preserve the climate and nature,” he told The Local.
“I find it scandalous that a president, who is normally a highly responsible person – that’s the role of a president, after all – lets himself undo in a few minutes an international decision that was signed after a considerable amount of effort,” he said.
Despite the inflammatory message, Hanggeli doesn’t really want to rock the boat – calling the poster more of a “rant.”
Americans are welcome aboard but they should be ready to “have a discussion” about Trump’s withdrawal.
“On Sunday I had some Californians who came on the boat and we laughed about it,” he said.
Others have actually apologized to him for being American, he said.
Local politician Pierre-Antoine Hildbrand thinks Hanggeli missed the boat with his message, which he said is “discriminatory” and runs counter to Swiss hospitality.
“This isn’t a long-term political engagement. It’s a rant,” the captain of the solar-powered boat said. “I won’t remove it because I’m scared or because I regret it, I’ll take it down because I have other things to put up in its place!”
