President Donald Trump did not inform South Korea and other US allies before pulling out of the highly anticipated North Korean summit with Kim Jong-un on Thursday in an effort to avoid leaks, a report said.

A South Korean official told The Wall Street Journal that Trump’s announcement came “out of the blue” as the National Security Council scheduled a meeting with the South to discuss other options moving forward, including military action.

In the letter to Kim, Trump still held out hope for a possible meeting, telling Kim “please do not hesitate to call me or write” if he changes his mind.

Trump ordered the letter be released before alerting allies in order to avoid leaks, the Journal said.

South Korea has been waging its own diplomatic charm campaign with the nuclear-armed North.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in — who met with Trump earlier this week — held an emergency meeting with senior aides after the surprise announcement.
