Donald Trump’s front-runner status has left Tony Blair at a complete loss, the former British prime minister said Wednesday.

“Sometimes I look at politics today and wonder if I still understand it,” Blair told CNBC at the Global Financial Markets Forum 2016 in Abu Dhabi.

The center-left British head of state from 1997 to 2007 sarcastically questioned himself and wondered whether he grasps today’s social media-fueled campaigns.

Modern technology and communications can help “insurgent movements that are often around very polarizing political positions,” he noted.

“I get really anxious when I think that policy is being made by Twitter feed,” Blair said. “Those that shout the loudest do not necessarily deserve to be heard the most.”
