WASHINGTON — Top Republican leaders are shooting down speculation that the GOP nominee for president might be selected at a “brokered” convention.
“It hasn’t happened in a very long time and I think it’s highly unlikely to happen,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said at a Politico breakfast Tuesday.
Republicans have been running through the machinations of what might happen if no nominee gets a majority of delegates.
Under the rules, 1,237 of 2,472 are needed to lock up the nomination.
Donald Trump has revisited threats to run as an independent if he’s not treated “fairly” — meaning if party insiders try to deny him, despite success in the primaries.
