President Trump pushed harder Saturday on his plan to let teachers pack heat against school shooters — an idea he touted as a low-cost way to boost student safety.
“Armed Educators (and trusted people who work within a school) love our students and will protect them,” he tweeted at 1:54 p.m. “Very smart people. Must be firearms adept & have annual training. Should get yearly bonus. Shootings will not happen again – a big & very inexpensive deterrent. Up to States.”
Trump’s proposal mimics a program in place in Texas since 2013. Florida legislators are weighing a similar plan in the wake of the Feb. 14 shootings at a Parkland high school that killed 17.
Fifty percent of Americans oppose arming teachers and other school workers, a CBS News poll found Friday. The poll found 44 percent of people favor the idea.
