Donald Trump is poised to hold a summit with Vladimir Putin within weeks of becoming president, a report said Saturday.
Team Trump has informed British officials that their first foreign trip will be a meeting with the Russian strongman, possibly in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, the Sunday Times of London reported.
Trump’s goal is to reach an agreement limiting nuclear weapons, the report said.
Sources who have discussed the plans with officials at the Russian embassy in London say Moscow is set to agree to a summit between the two leaders.
A site has not been agreed on. But Reykjavik is a top contender, as a nod to the scene of President Reagan’s Cold War deal-making with Mikhail Gorbachev, the Times noted.
Trump’s bro-mance with Putin — each has publicly praised the other — has stirred much controversy in the months since US intelligence officials have revealed Russia’s state-sponsored hacking plot to interfere with the presidential election.
