Biden heads to North Carolina

By Samuel Chamberlain

Air Force One is wheels up and headed to Raleigh, NC, where Biden will hold his first post-debate event at midday Friday.

When the president wakes up in a few hours, he will do so as a clear and decisive underdog to retain his office and will face more pressure than ever from within his party to step aside in favor of someone, anyone, who can appear more up to the job than he did tonight.

This concludes The Post's live presidential debate coverage.

There are 130 days until Election Day, and the race has profoundly changed.

Asked about calls for him to drop out and whether he had any concerns about his own performance, Biden said: “No. It’s hard to debate a liar. The New York Times pointed out he lied 26 times.”

Jill Biden says hubby did 'great job' answering 'every question'

By Josh Christenson

First lady Jill Biden tried to puff up her hubby at the watch party after his disappointing debate performance.

"Joe, you did such a great job. You answered every question," Jill beamed. "You knew all the facts."

"And let me ask the crowd, what did Trump do?" she asked before shouting along with attendees, "Lie!"

You cannot spin that. pic.twitter.com/epawAzPXcD

Rep. Ritchie Torres declares US 'greatest loser' of debate

By Josh Christenson

"The greatest loser of tonight’s debate is the country," Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) posted on X.

Torres, a staunch pro-Israel Democrat, was endorsed by Biden when he first ran for Congress in 2020.

The South Bronx Democrat has tepidly supported Biden as the "best hope" for defeating Trump in 2024 — but found himself on the wrong side of the incumbent over the administration's response to the Israel-Hamas war.

Jen Psaki wants Kamala Harris 'on every morning show tomorrow'

By Ryan King

Former White House press secretary-turned-MSNBC host Jen Psaki wants to see a lot more of Vice President Kamala Harris from now own.

"They should have her out on every morning show tomorrow," she said during the network's post-debate coverage. "Early on — not because it was warranted — she was not confident in her own ability to do an interview like she just did."

Fellow anchor Rachel Maddow said she wished Harris had gone 20 minutes in her interview with the liberal network after earlier appearing on CNN.

Psaki also acknowledged Democratic heart palpitations over President Biden's debate performance.

"The chatter is very distracting and it’s going to be very consuming for the campaign," she said. "'Should he be replaced?' They’re going to be answering that question instead of breaking through on attacking Trump."

CNN flash poll shows Trump debate winner by 2-to-1 margin

By Diana Nerozzi

ATLANTA-- A flash poll conducted by CNN found that two-thirds of debate watchers, 67%, thought Trump won the debate.

Only 33% said Biden won as the incumbent struggles with his voice and at times forgot what he was trying to say.

While the flash poll is a good indicator of feeling among debate watchers, its predictive value should be taken with a grain of salt.

In 2020, the CNN flash poll found Biden won both debates with Trump, taking the first forum by a margin of 60% to 28% and the second by 53% to 39%.

Rubio doesn't know if he'll be Trump's VP pick

By Ryan King

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio insisted he was unsure whether Donald Trump would select him as vice president, hours after Lara Trump told NBC News that the former president has told people his plan.

"Oh, I don't know the answer to that, and no one told me I am. I haven't any reason to think that they've been thinking about it this week, but we'll know who it is at some point in the next two weeks," Rubio told CNN.

That's a reference to the Republican National Convention, which begins July 15. Trump previously said he'd make his decision known by then or during the convention.

Turning to the president's performance, Rubio said that "clearly the president struggled tonight, and I do worry about the impact that that has in Beijing, in Tehran ... [our] adversaries see that, and perhaps feel emboldened."

Biden surrogate blames performance on 'cold'

By Diana Nerozzi

ATLANTA-- Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) defended Biden's debate performance, citing the "cold" the president had.

Reporters repeatedly questioned the Biden surrogate about whether he was concerned about the 81-year-old's mental capacity after the debate.

“I mean, look, I think it's already been reported that the president had a cold," Garcia said.

"I mean I think it's, I'd rather have a president that might have a minor cold to actually having someone that lies all night."

Sen. Lindsey Graham calls for no more debates

By Victor Nava

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) argued that the second planned debate between President Biden and former President Donald Trump should be called off.

“I worry that we're in a dangerous spot in the world after this debate,” Graham told Fox News. “We don't need any more debates. This should be it.”

“I don't want the world to see this again,” he added. “I don't want to see this again.”

Graham asserted that based on the 81-year-old Biden's performance “there's no way” that he is “capable of being president.”

“It's not about his misspeaking, it's about his capability to be commander in chief at a time of great peril,” Graham said.

“I worry about what Iran's thinking."

Biden 'unfit for office' after debate: Arizona Congressional candidate

By Cameron Arcand

Here in Chandler, Arizona, Republican congressional candidate Kelly Cooper, who's likely to be running against Democratic Rep.Greg Stanton in November, told the Post, "After tonight's debate, it's clear that Biden is unfit for office. He's left our border unsecured and created a failing economy. The American people deserve a change."

Harris sidesteps CNN anchor's question about Biden's cognitive acuity

By Josh Christenson

In a final question, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper pressed Harris again about Biden's cognitive acuity.

"The person we saw tonight, the president standing on that stage, is that how he is every day?" Cooper asked Harris in his most direct question of the interview.

"The Joe Biden that I work with every day is someone who, as I have said, has performed in a way that has been about bringing people into the Oval Office, Republicans and Democrats, to compromise in a way that is extraordinary these days because it just doesn't happen," Harris said, sidestepping the question.

"That's the Joe Biden I know."

Reporters swarm Biden's team in spin room

By Diana Nerozzi

ATLANTA — Reporters ran toward a shot of speaking to Biden surrogates California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) as soon as the Democrats came into the spin room.

About 100 members of the media shouted questions about Biden's performance, which Democrats have said was surprisingly worrisome due to his freezes and a cold.

Reporters ran toward a shot of speaking to Biden surrogates California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) as soon as the Democrats came into the spin room.

"What does president Biden need to do to reassure Democrats, governor?" one reporter shouted.
