President Trump on Monday called on lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to pass legislation requiring strong background checks for firearms purchases — and accused the media of fostering “the anger and rage that has built up over many years.”

“We cannot let those killed in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, die in vain. Likewise for those so seriously wounded. We can never forget them, and those many who came before them,” the president said in a tweet.

“Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform,” he continued.

“We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!”

The president later took aim at the media, saying it “has a big responsibility to life and safety in our Country.

“Fake News has contributed greatly to the anger and rage that has built up over many years. News coverage has got to start being fair, balanced and unbiased, or these terrible problems will only get worse!” he tweeted.

Trump is scheduled to deliver remarks at the White House at 10 a.m. Monday in the wake of the two mass shootings that killed 29 people and wounded dozens more in less than 24 hours.

On Sunday, the president said he had spoken to Attorney General William Barr and FBI Director Christopher Wray about the killings.

“We have to get it stopped, this has been going on for years and years,” Trump said before he and first lady Melania Trump departed New Jersey for the White House.
