President Trump on Friday suggested that the FBI investigation into his administration and possible ties to Russia was “an excuse” cooked up by Democrats for losing the presidential election.

“It’s almost impossible for the Democrats to lose the electoral college, as you know. You have to run up the whole East Coast and win everything as a Republican and that’s what we did,” Trump said during a joint news conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

“So it was just an excuse.”

Asked about ex-FBI director James Comey, and his conflicting account of their conversations, Trump answered curtly.

“No collusion, no obstruction. He’s a leaker. But we want to get back to running our great country,” he said.

Asked directly if he had tapes of their conversation, the president ducked.

“Well, I’ll tell you something about that maybe sometime in the very near future,” he said.

He refused to answer repeated questions on the topic, and grew angry when asked about Comey’s statement that he had demanded loyalty.

“I didn’t say that. I didn’t say that,” he repeated, while stopping short of branding Comey as a liar.
