President Donald Trump on Tuesday acknowledged that the Kremlin will be meddling in the November midterm elections, but believes they’ll be doing so to help Democratic candidates because he’s too tough on Russia.

“I’m very concerned that Russia will be fighting very hard to have an impact on the upcoming Election. Based on the fact that no President has been tougher on Russia than me, they will be pushing very hard for the Democrats,” he posted on his Twitter account. “They definitely don’t want Trump!”

Trump, who has called Russian interference in the 2016 election a “big hoax,” stunned many Republicans and Democrats last week during a news conference in Helsinki when he sided with President Vladimir Putin instead of the US intelligence community on Moscow’s meddling.

During a two-hour face-to-face summit with the Russian strongman, Trump said, he brought up the matter of election meddling — but Putin denied it.

“I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today,” Trump said.

At the same news conference, Putin was asked if he had wanted Trump to win the 2016 election.

“Yes, I did. Yes, I did. Because he talked about bringing the US-Russia relationship back to normal,” he said.
