President Trump did not place his hand on a stack of two Bibles held by first lady Melania Trump as he was sworn into office on Monday — but many social media users came to his defense, arguing the oath was rushed.
Instead of placing his hand on the Bibles, Trump stood with his left arm down by his side as he raised his right hand for the oath of office.
People were quick to question the move and considered that it might be a sign of Trump’s departure from presidential norms, but others noted that the entire ceremony appeared to be rushed, blaming Chief Justice John Roberts.

She got there about halfway through but by that time, Trump was already doing it that way, and just continued on,” one user wrote on X.
“Chief Justice Roberts has a history of f—ing up the administering of the presidential oath. He rushed it today and they didn’t even have the Bible or the family in place. In Obama’s first inauguration, he mumbled through parts of it, and they actually had to redo it in the Oval Office a few hours later to make sure it took. Roberts is kind of a boob,” another X user added.
Others didn’t care all that much and were confused by the outrage.

Trump is obviously a christian and he still chose for the bible to be there, they dont just bring a bible and you can swear on it or not. If he chose the bible to be present, that means hes swearing upon it,” one user wrote on X.
“I am evangelical. What does it really mean any way? Matthew 5 says to not swear an oath at all but instead let your yes be yes and no be no. Past presidents have sworn on the Holy Bible and betrayed their oath. I care about President Trump doing what he says,” another X user noted.
