The leader of Iraq said President Trump did not ask his permission to allow US troops stationed in his country to “watch Iran.”
“Don’t overburden Iraq with your own issues,” Barham Salih said during a forum in Baghdad on Monday, Reuters reported. “The U.S. is a major power … but do not pursue your own policy priorities, we live here.”
Salih said US troops in Iraq are there as part of an agreement between the two countries that they would battle terrorists — an objective they should abide by.
Trump, in an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that aired Sunday, proposed taking advantage of the US military presence in Iraq to keep an eye on Iran.
“We spent a fortune on building this incredible base. We might as well keep it,” the president said. “And one of the reasons I want to keep it is because I want to be looking a little bit at Iran because Iran is a real problem.”
Anchor Margaret Brennan asked the commander-in-chief if he wanted the troops there to “be able to strike in Iran?”
“No,” Trump replied. “Because I want to be able to watch Iran.”
